Get Those Entries In Soon For Epic Mountain Bike Challenge
Time is running out to enter the Talisman The Herald Karoo to Coast Mountain Bike Challenge 2008.
The race, which takes place on September 21, has attained cult status in cycling circles and tackles the gruelling Prince Alfred Pass between Uniondale and Knysna.
The race was initiated by the Knysna and Uniondale Lions clubs for the specific purpose of raising funds for “Sight First”, a project that aims to help the visually impaired.
The money garnered from the Karoo to Coast challenge is used to fund cataract operations for the poor. To date, 1105 people have received the operations at the Knysna Provincial Hospital.
Olwen Toms, of the Knysna Lions Club, said the two clubs had decided to channel funds from the race into one cause.
“We chose the sight operations because at that time there was a backlog of over 700 patients needing surgery. The eye clinics were unable to cope with the number so we decided the Lions would fund cataract operations,” she said. Uniondale Lion Suzanne Zondagh said apart from the Sight First project, which included six cataract operations and the dispensing of 200 spectacle prescriptions from the eye clinic, the club helped with various worthy causes in the town.
“We helped the local hostel by buying much-needed bed linen, we sponsor a luncheon for the elderly and we also have helped with equipment for the hospital,” she said.
Worldwide, the Lions have 1,3 million members in 202 countries and conduct vision and health screening, build parks, support eye hospitals, award scholarships, assist youth projects and provide help in time of disaster.
Event organiser Zandile Meneses said the race not only offered an opportunity to the visually impaired, but resulted in job creation in the Langeberg. In addition, local labourers had adopted a healthier lifestyle by taking up cycling as a direct result of the race.
Meneses said entries had increased by over 20 per cent this year. She encouraged cyclists to enter as soon as possible.
Online entries (www.gardenroute.co.za and www.theherald.co.za) for the event will be open until mid-September.
After that, cyclists can enter in person in Uniondale on Saturday September 20 between 3pm and 9pm.
